Few features impact your appearance more than the eyes. Emotion, energy and age are all reflected in the eyes, saying more about you than any other single feature. When your eyes are surrounded by puffiness, sagging skin and wrinkles, they may be sending the wrong message. Blepharoplasty can help restore youthfulness and energy to your eyes that improves your overall appearance.
What is Blepharoplasty?
Both the upper and lower eyelids are prone to aging effects. The delicate skin and tissue on the moving lids can loosen and sag, changing the appearance of your eyes and face. Blepharoplasty, or eyelid lift surgery, strives to remove excess skin, fat and tissue that causes hooded upper eyelids or large bags under the eyes. The tissue is carefully elevated to restore a more youthful appearance.
For upper eyelid blepharoplasty, a small incision is made at the crease of the upper lid. Excess fat and skin tissue can be removed or repositioned, along with muscle and skin tightening. This can “open” the eyes and reduce a tired or sad appearance that accompanies a hooded upper eyelid. For some, this can also improve vision, if the sagging tissue was affecting sight. An upper eyelid lift is often combined with a lower eyelid lift or a brow lift to enhance the overall appearance of the eyes and brows.
On the lower eyelid, the incision during an eyelid lift is usually made under the lashes. Fat and skin tissue are removed and/or elevated to decrease the appearance of bags under the eye. This can create a refreshed, youthful appearance for the eyes and face.
Recovery from blepharoplasty usually takes one to two weeks. Some swelling, bruising and mild discomfort are to be expected. Most people are able to return to work or social activities within two weeks and begin enjoying their new rejuvenated appearance.
Who is a Good Candidate for an Eyelid Lift?
If you are constantly asked whether you are tired or sad, yet you feel happy and energetic, your eyes may be telling the world a different story. Men and women with permanent bags under the eyes or droopy, hooded upper eyelids can have tremendous results from blepharoplasty. Good candidates are healthy and do not smoke, ensuring they have fewer surgical risks and will recover quickly from the procedure.
