Few facial injectables have had such a quick rise in popularity as Botox. Although Botox has been around for decades, it was first approved by the FDA for cosmetic treatment of frown lines in 2002. Since then, millions of Botox injections have been used every year to smooth lines and wrinkles, as well as for other cosmetic purposes. Joshua D. Rosenberg, MD, offers precise Botox injections at his offices in NYC and Upper East Side to create beautiful facial enhancements for his patients.
How Does Botox Work?
Botox is a neuromodulator, a sterile derivative of botulinum toxin that blocks nerve signals to targeted muscles. When injected to impact a specific nerve, it can result in a relaxation or temporary paralysis of the affected muscle. For cosmetic purposes, this can smooth lines that are formed with muscle contraction. It can also help relax muscles that are pulling tissues up or down to create the desired effect, such as relaxing an upper lip to reduce a “gummy” smile. Botox is also used for treatment of muscle spasms and can help with facial nerve paralysis, as well as hyperhidrosis and other conditions.
Botox injections only require a quick office visit, usually less than a half hour. There may be several injections performed at one time, depending on the patient and the area treated. Dr. Rosenberg uses advanced techniques to minimize bruising and swelling from the injections. Many patients come in for treatments on a lunch break and feel comfortable returning to work, as there are no noticeable marks. Results typically take a few days up to two weeks to appear and can last for up to six months before another treatment is needed.
