Ear Surgery/Otoplasty

For patients with large or protruding ears, corrective ear surgery (Otoplasty) is an option to improve the appearance of the external ear. In most cases, an incision is hidden behind the ear to reshape the cartilaginous structure of the ear and restore balance to the face. At Mount Sinai, our expert Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons have extensive experience with Otoplasty techniques in both children and adults. We typically recommend surgery be done after the age of six, when the cartilage of the ear has achieved maturity. The goal of the Otoplasty is to create a natural, long-lasting result and create better facial symmetry.

Otoplasty is usually done on an outpatient basis at our private, Ambulatory Surgery Center. Prior to surgery patients are given instructions regarding medications and how to prepare for their recovery. After surgery, patients are usually given a short course of antibiotics and mild pain medication as some mild discomfort may persist for the first few days. Patients should expect to return to school, work or social activities within one to two weeks after surgery. We do ask that patients avoid strenuous activities for two weeks after surgery.
